MED STUDENTS ORIENTATION WEEK

Application Process

The School of Medicine participates in the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). The AMCAS application and instructions for completing the application are available through the AMCAS web site. Application for the School of Medicine should be made through AMCAS as early as possible in the year preceding intended matriculation.

The closing date for filing applications for the VCU School of Medicine is October 15 of the year preceding the enrollment date. Priority for admission is given to Virginia residents; however, 80-plus members of each class are from out-of-state. Members of disadvantaged populations are encouraged to apply to the School of Medicine. Students previously dismissed from a medical school will not be considered. Only United States and Canadian citizens and permanent residents are considered for admission. Permanent residency must be in effect at the time of submitting the AMCAS application. Permanent residents must submit a copy of their permanent resident card prior to file review of their application.

Invitation to submit supplemental application is offered only to students felt to be competitive in the current pool. A nonrefundable $80 application fee and supplemental information—including faculty recommendations—are required with all applications accepted for further consideration. The final date for returning supplemental information is 60 days from the date you were granted a supplemental application. That date is your file completion deadline.

The VCU School of Medicine will not admit students from other health sciences schools until such students have completed the degree program in which they are enrolled.

Early Decision Plan

The School of Medicine participates in the Early Decision Plan. This program permits an applicant to file a single application through AMCAS in early summer prior to August 1. The supplemental application must be submitted by August 15.

All applicants filing under the Early Decision Plan will receive consideration for admission and a response on or before October 1. All applications for the Early Decision Plan must be supported by the results of the MCAT at the time the application is made. The early notification date of this plan ensures that those who are unsuccessful have ample time to request further distribution of their applications to other medical schools. Further information on the early Decision Plan is available with the AMCAS application.

Responsibilities of Medical School Applicants

All applicants are expected to comply with the AAMC Recommendations for Medical School Applicants. For more information, go to the Association of American Medical Colleges Web site.
