Primary Care Series

The online continuing medical education (CME) series is designed for busy primary care physicians who care for children. The topics, selected by course director and community pediatrician Dr. Leann Kridelbaugh, are presented by UT Southwestern faculty physicians and provide practical updates on pediatric conditions commonly seen in primary care offices. The lectures provide free CME credits on relevant pediatric topics at your convenience.

Epilepsy and Seizure Management

Three pediatric neurologists specializing in epilepsy provide updates on seizure management for your primary care practice. Topics include evaluation and treatment of a first seizure, including when to image and when to treat; practical information on counseling patients and families on safety for children with seizures; and being an active partner in the care of children referred to a neurologist or epilepsy specialist. In addition to the lecture, associated printable materials offer handouts for your patient families, as well as a comprehensive epilepsy toolkit for your practice. Constipation in Children

Dr. Meghana Sathe, pediatric gastroenterologist and assistant professor of pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center, discusses the common problem of childhood constipation. Dr. Sathe reviews causes, “red flags” for pathologic constipation and treatment of functional constipation. Primary care physicians who care for children will benefit from this practical review of a problem that may account for up to 3% of pediatric medical visits.

Acute and Chronic Abdominal Pain

If you care for children who complain of abdominal pain, this lecture is for you. Pediatric Gastroenterologist Dr. Rina Sanghavi, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern, offers practical tips for evaluating abdominal pain in children in primary care settings. Dr. Sanghavi reviews causes of pediatric abdominal pain, basic evaluation, when to refer to GI or surgery, and the diagnosis and management of functional abdominal pain in children.
