The University of California's five medical centers are included among the nation's best hospitals in U.S. News & World Report's annual rankings, released today (July 21).

UCLA and UCSF medical centers again cracked U.S. News' top 10, ranked third and eighth, respectively. Both are on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll for the nation’s top 15 hospitals. The honor roll is reserved for hospitals receiving very high scores in at least six specialty areas.

“A Best Hospital has demonstrated expertise in treating the most challenging patients, ” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “A hospital that emerged from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of.”

The magazine evaluated nearly 5, 000 hospitals in 16 specialties. UCLA ranked within the top 50 in 15 specialties, UCSF in 14, UC San Diego in 12, UC Davis in 10 and UC Irvine in two. The rankings also rate hospitals by metropolitan areas: UC Davis, UC San Diego and UCSF are all No. 1 in their metro areas. In the Los Angeles metro area, UCLA was ranked No. 2 (behind Cedars-Sinai) and UC Irvine was ranked No. 5 (best in Orange County).
